Margaret Thatcher

Here's a really quick caricature sketch of probably the most hated and despised Prime Minister this country has ever had. I drew it with a blue pencil then digitally added the colour wash. I thought blue would be an appropriate colour for her. I spent about 20 minutes on this, max.
To put it (very) mildly, I am 'not overly fond' of this woman. She ruined so many people's lives and didn't have a single shred of humanity. Her funeral will take place in London at the cost of over ten million pounds...courtesy of tax payers money. Sigh... I could go on and on about why I have nothing but utter contempt for 'Evil Thatcher' and her ilk, etc, but her critics have pretty much said it all before me in the last seven days. Good riddance to her.
Have fun, and enjoy celebrating her death... if you must! Stay safe and keep the peace if you are planning on taking to the streets to protest against her and hers. Meanwhile, we have another 'Nightmare On Downing Street' to contend with; Thatcher's progeny, in the shape of the 'Con-dems'. Grrrrr! Time to get busy, people...
For me, singer Billy Bragg sums things up best in a recent online post :
"This is not a time for celebration. The death of Margaret Thatcher is nothing more than a salient reminder of how Britain got into the mess that we are in today. Of why ordinary working people are no longer able to earn enough from one job to support a family; of why there is a shortage of decent affordable housing; of why domestic growth is driven by credit, not by real incomes; of why tax-payers are forced to top up wages; of why a spiteful government seeks to penalise the poor for having an extra bedroom; of why Rupert Murdoch became so powerful; of why cynicism and greed became the hallmarks of our society.

Raising a glass to the death of an infirm old lady changes none of this. The only real antidote to cynicism is activism. Don't celebrate – organise!"

Celebrity Caricatures for Fundraising Event

Hello peeps. Recently, I was asked (at short notice!) to supply some 'celebrity caricatures' by the Prince and Princess of Wales Glasgow Hospice, who were having a fundraising Sportsman's dinner at the Glasgow Hilton Hotel last week, (spons...ored by Barrs Soft Drinks) on the 21st of March 2013. I was asked to draw the guest speakers ( 3 famous sporting faces) and the caricatures were signed, framed and auctioned off on the night to raise money for the charity. The guest speakers were Scottish golfing champ Paul Lawrie, footballer Graeme Le Saux and 'Countdown' and Sky Sports host, Jeff Stelling. So, I got my pens out and knocked out the 3 caricatures in my 'live style' in an afternoon....
(Click on any image to enlarge)
Here's Graeme Le Saux at the Glasgow Hilton with his caricature...
Here's golfer Paul Lawrie with his....
And here's Sky sports / Countdown presenter Jeff Stelling with his caricature....
(Annoyingly, Jeff's had a  stylish new haircut, therefore he looks a little different from the photos I was working from!)
By all reports it was a great night in Glasgow and yesterday I received some nice feedback via email...

" Dear Edd, On behalf of the patients, staff and volunte...ers of The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, may I thank you very much for donating the fantastic caricatures of our guest speakers to auction at Thursday’s Sportsman’s Dinner, sponsored by Barr Soft Drinks.

I am delighted to let you know that your prize raised £325 and that the evening raised around £60,000 for the Hospice. As you know, our annual running costs are now in the order of £4.4 million of which £3 million must come from voluntary donations. The proceeds raised will help us to continue to care for our patients who have life limiting illnesses and also support their families. Thank you again for your support of Glasgow’s Hospice.
Kind regards,

Very cool! Nice one. I was happy to help a good cause and had good fun drawing those faces...some 'excellent features' to play with! Thankyou to Jennifer for the photos. If you'd like to donate to a worthy cause please click on the Hospice link at the beginning of this post. Thanks!

Please be sociable and share!

The 'Apprentice' star was born on this day, 1947.
I don't watch a lot of telly, but I do like a bit of the Apprentice when it's on...if only to have a laugh at the muppets with the over inflated egos who apply for the job! Hope you like it.

Born on this day, 1919. AKA- 'The Man With the Velvet Voice'.
A proper old crooner with a great face for a caricature! I've lost count of the amount of weddings I've caricatured at and heard his perrenial, swoony classic 'When I Fall In Love' fill up the dancefloor with shuffling, misty-eyed, loved up guests...just beautiful!
Hope you all get your 'Nat King Cole' this weekend....!

Some Recent Caricaturey Stuff....!!

A wedding caricature used on the couples' invitations and a 50th birthday gift caricature. The fella's wife thinks he resembles a 'primate' so she asked me to include one in the picture! Thanks to Anne for a fun job and all the best to Lynsey and Rich for when they tie the knot this summer. And finally, a self caricature sketch of yours truly! I've lost count of the amount of times I've been asked if I've ever drawn myself, so here's what I did last week....Phwoooaarrr, eh? What a hunky hearthrob! Relax ladies, I'm spoken for!   Click to enlarge any image.

And yes, my wife did hang this on the front door to keep the burglars away....

'People, Hell and Angels'...

Edd's Heads: Jimi Hendrix
A 'new' album by the late great Jimi Hendrix is released this week.
'People , Hell and Angels' is a compilation of newly discovered, previously unheard recordings by the genius guitar wizard. I've heard a couple of tracks recently already on BBC6 music....which sound awesome, as you might expect! I may have to treat myself to an early father's day present!
Anyway, here's my caricature of Jimi which I thought I may as well repost. Hope you hip cats dig it!

Dame Helen Mirren

Edd's Heads: Helen Mirren

Here's a wee sketch I did recently of the British actress for the monthly facebook Bookface Caricature Artists competition. I was unable to submit the drawing though, as when I tried to register for the comp, facebook kept redirecting me back to my own page! It was most annoying, so I gave up in the end. This seems to happen a lot with other facebook group pages I try to look at also....I don't understand it! Anyway, it was a fun exercise I suppose and this would've been my contender.

PS: If there's any FB experts out there who can give me some tips, please drop me a line at: as there's some things I still don't understand (I only started this page in July last year!) a luddite out please!

Here's a brand new caricature of Manchester music legend Johnny Marr. Hope you like it!
Johnny Marr has a brand new album called 'The Messenger'- out today folks. I have been a huge fan of this man for years and I reckon he's one of the coolest dudes on the planet. The Smiths remain my all-time fave band! I'm really looking forward to his new album and seeing Johnny live when he plays in Glasgow next month. Hope he plays the odd 'golden-oldie!' Bring it on! See ya down the front...!

Happy Birthday Bruce Forsyth!

Edd's Heads: Bruce Forsyth
'Click to enlarge, my love, click to enlarge...'
"Nice to see you, to see you nice!" The twinkly, wrinkly, gargantuan-chinned; golfing, leather-faced, tap-dancing, multi-catch-phrase-using, rug-wearing, all-singing, all-dancing, tv and gameshow hosting, showbiz legend and dodger of coffins, was born on this day, in 1928! Some say he is immortal and cannot be killed. Others think he has already lived for centuries like some sort of 'time-lord-showbiz-vampire'....Anyway, no matter, you've got to salute the old fella for still being in the game at his age! Here's a pencil sketch I did the other day. Hope you like it.
 Happy birthday, Brucie!

Happy Birthday Rihanna!

Edd's Heads: Rihanna
Born on this day, 1988.
What would you get for someone like Rihanna for her birthday then? I'd maybe get her a book token or a gift voucher for Argos in a card...that way she could treat herself. Then maybe say to her she could have a friend round after school for pizza and a video from Blockbusters, if she wants and that would be it....afterall, it is a school night. We could always go to the cinema or rollerblading at the weekend....if she's good...!
The photo I drew this from was from several hairdo's / wigs ago...but I think it ain't a bad drawing.
Hope you like it.

Paul Weller

Now....this old geezer can knock out a tune! Here's a sketch of  'The Modfather', Paul Weller which I drew last week. Well, I say 'last week'....I actually started this piece last summer but didn't finish it for some reason; then I kind of forgot about it, then lost it, then I recently found it again in the back of an old sketchbook, made a few changes to it and tweaked it around a bit till I was happy and now I'm showing it to you....Found myself singing 'Jam' tunes as I drew it! Hope you like it.

Robbie Williams

It's Robbie Williams birthday today. Born on this day, 1974 (same year as me). I wont bother wishing him a happy one, as I have never been a fan of this man or his 'music'.  In my opinion, he's an untalented, overblown,  irritating, cheesey, chancer. His music, (and in particular, his single, 'Angels'), has to truly be the most vomit-inducing, sickening, vile shite that anyone from this country has ever produced. I could go on, of course, but I think I will repost the words from former Creation Records boss / ex-Oasis manager (and fellow Glaswegian), Alan McGhee to state why he hates Robbie Williams.....I think he's got it spot on.....

Alan McGhee:  "Robbie Williams is not a "British hero", as a BBC-sponsored vote once incredibly claimed. He's not even an "all-round entertainer". As Noel Gallagher famously said, he's an all round 'crap dancer' who can't sing too well either. He truly is the new Cliff Richard for our generation, and who in their right mind wants one of them?

He was rubbish in Take That, and they were an atrocity of a band - God help us now they're back. Yet solo, he's even worse than they are! No wonder the Yanks don't want him no matter how much money the CEO of EMI throws at it. They were almost giving the last CD away for free in the States and still nobody bought one.

I actually despair when people who know about music credit him with substance, or mention him in the same breath as Michael Jackson or Elton John. These people are brilliant, world class musical talents. Robbie's just a showbiz chancer. I remember him hanging around the Oasis caravan at Glastonbury in 1995. Unfortunately, he never really went away after that in our lives.

To me, Robbie Williams is a crime against music. It's people like him who are destroying British pop culture. He has 1% of Mick Jagger's talent. He's the post-9/11 feelgood factor. He doesn't mean anything - he's utterly vacant. If Robbie Williams is what sells then give me any unsigned band in a garage any day of the week. At least they'll love music. Robbie Williams is music for people who don't feel - or the payment on the mortgage, if you work for EMI".

Spot on. I wonder how many 'obligatory Brit awards' he'll get this year from the establishment that cares more about sales and shifting units than the actual art of pop music....Ah well. Hope you like my caricature of the watery-looking-eyed, cheeky chappie bawbag!

The Pope Resigns!

Just heard that Pope Benedict XVI is packing it in due to age and health troubles. Shame. He had a great face for caricature and always seemed to look a bit evil and creepy! I enjoyed drawing him. Happy retirement, Popester!

The Fantastic Ford Part 2!

Well, my weekend just got off to a good start! Earlier today I got an email from 'Still Game' star Ford Kiernan telling me to check out today's Daily Record newspaper as he'd managed to sneak my recent caricature of him into a photo for a feature about a movie he's in. And, sure enough....!

What an absolute, star Ford Kiernan is, eh? That was really, really kind of him to include my caricature in the photoshoot. I emailed him my sincere thanks. I kinda wish I'd done a better job on it now as it wasjust a sketch, really! Had I known it was going to be used in a national newspaper, I'd have done a better, full colour job. Ah well, nice wee bit bit of publicity I suppose and this pic got me some major 'likeys' over on my Facebook page! Thanks to everyone for all the positive vibes and thanks a million to The Fantastic Ford once again! Go and see his movie 'Songs For Amy' when it comes out later this month! Cheers.

Happy Birthday John Lydon!

Edd's Heads: John Lydon
Click to "OOOPENUUUPPP...!!!"
Many happy returns to John Joseph Lydon, AKA 'Johnny Rotten' from The Sex Pistols, born on this day, 1956. I have always been inspired by the DIY ethics of PUNK and the Pistols are an on-going inspiration....definitely one of my favourite bands. I think John is a National Treasure. He speaks with  a lot of truth, wit and honesty. His sense and his anger, bite and rage at the world remain undiminished with no sign of 'mellowing' despite his years! I find him hugely entertaining and applaude his 'zero-tolerance for bullshit' approach to everything. He's a true 'one off' and a hilarious lunatic to boot....not to mention a great face to draw! Here's to ya, Johnny....!
Incidentally, I have prints for sale of this piece if anyone's interested.
Why not get a great gift for the Pistols fan in your life...? Valentine's day is coming up soon, y'know...Email me at:

Live Event Caricatures

It's been a while since I posted any photos of my live event caricatures here on the blog...although if you regularly look at my Facebook page, you'll see my more recent work there! Anyway, here's a wee selection of photos from the 50 Plus Show I attended in November last year in Glasgow. I was hired by MacMillan Cancer for the event to draw 'free caricatures' at their stand to attract business. We were extremely busy on both days so mission accomplished then! (Who doesn't love a 'freebie', eh?) Thanks to Johnathon for the gig and, as always thanks a million to the good citizens of Glasgow for letting me share the photos!  Click to enlarge any image.
