Happy Halloween!

Have fun whatever you are doing!

Incidentally, did you know that I live in a haunted house? No kidding! There's a spooky, ghostly creature which has bad breath and sometimes steals sweets off my kids. It's haunted us here at home for ten years. And I've got photo evidence to prove it too! A while ago I was fiddling about with my camera in the kitchen and accidentally took a picture of what I thought was the floor....however, on closer inspection, you can just about make out a terrifying, ghostly spirit.....!!!Take a look for yourself if you dont believe me....WOOOOOoooo!!! Scary! Please don't have nightmares...!

The current Doctor Who star was born on this day 1982.
A great face and hairstyle to draw....a real gift! There's a term used amongst caricaturists for drawing faces with striking features such as this...it's called 'a field day!' Hope you like it.

The new James Bond movie 'Skyfall' opens in the UK this week. Perfect excuse then for me to post a caricature of the current Mr Bond, Daniel Craig. Hope you like it.

Happy Birthday Ken Stott!

I did this piece a couple of years ago. I remember drawing a few preparatory sketches of Ken in my sketchbook as I watched him as the lead role in a superb BBC drama about British comedian Tony Hancock. It's unusual for me to draw from just screen footage...I prefer still photos of a face to work from, but it was a fun challenge all the same. It's also unusual for me to caricature someone from just a 'side profile' view, but I think exaggerating the size of Ken's hooter swung it for me. Looking back, I think I tried to aim for a subtle, muted, 'atmospheric' approach to this one as opposed to my usual bold, bright, cartoony colours....and somewhere along the way I managed to make Ken look like some sort of  'Zombie Muppet...!?'

Oh well....it kept me occupied on a dark, wintry night I suppose, and creating art is a 'learning process' which I think is good for the soul.  An 'Expression of the imagination'. For me, art provides a means to express the imagination in non-grammatic ways that are not tied to the formality of spoken or written language. Unlike words, which come in sequences and each of which have a definite meaning, art provides a range of forms, symbols and ideas with meanings that are malleable....know what I mean?

Wooah, all that's a bit 'deep' for a Friday, eh....? Have a good weekend folks.

Well, sort of..... after my last couple of recent posts of extensive lady caricatures, I thought I'd better even things up with some male faces! Thanks a million to everyone from Telford and Stevenson colleges in Edinburgh for letting me share your pictures. It was great to meet you all and I wish you all the bst with your studies! Happy Birthday Simon Cowell!

.....Not really. I kind of love to hate the smug, orange faced, flat headed, minted, high-trousered, bleach toothed billionaire and the crappy, cheesy, blandoid, drivel music he inflicts on the world...but that's just me. The git was born on this day in 1959. Click to enlarge, if you can bear it....

Ladies, ladies, ladies, ladies, LADIES!! Yep. I was up to my eyes in 'em at Freshers Week in Edinburgh, last month. I felt a bit like Michael Caine in 'Zulu'....or one of the blokes from those dreadful 'Lynx' deoderant adverts! Only I smelt better (lynx is repulsive!)...Click on any image to enlarge.
